Why I Stayed With Questrade for So Long Before Switching
Questrade was not just inertia. For a Canadian household buying in USD, it solved a real problem before Wealthsimple caught up.
Short version: Questrade was the better fit when USD handling mattered more to me than a simpler app. Wealthsimple became viable only after its USD features caught up enough for our accounts.
Works best when
- Questrade was the main self-directed platform after CIBC mutual funds.
- The remaining RESP is in the process of moving from Questrade.
- Questrade served the household well and should not be framed as the villain.
Look elsewhere when
- Readers looking for a one-size-fits-all brokerage winner.
- Active traders who need advanced order types or professional trading features.
- People who only buy CAD-listed all-in-one ETFs and do not care about USD plumbing.
Where this started
This started with CIBC mutual funds. The fees were high, contributions felt clunky, and I wanted to understand direct stock trading instead of handing every decision to a product I barely understood.
Questrade made sense at the time because the accounts were small, trading costs mattered, and Wealthsimple either did not exist yet or did not solve the problem I had.
Why USD kept me there
The big reason I stayed was USD. If you buy US-listed holdings in Canadian registered accounts, forced back-and-forth currency conversion can quietly eat into the plan.
Questrade's ability to hold CAD and USD in registered accounts, plus moves like Norbert's Gambit, was a real advantage for the way I was investing.
Why the answer changed anyway
The answer changed when Wealthsimple caught up enough on USD handling and the 3% transfer match made the hassle worth looking at again.
That does not erase why Questrade was useful. It just means an old good answer had an expiry date, and I needed to check it again with 2026 facts.
